Workforce IAM Doesn’t Work for Customers, Claims Transmit Security

With eight key differences between customer identity and access management (CIAM) and workforce IAM, these two services aren’t interchangeable, according to the CIAM platform.

Transmit Security, a leading CIAM platform, recently discussed the reasons why a workforce Identity and Access Management (IAM) system does meet the needs of customers.

According to the company, IAM for workforce is distinctly different from Customer Identity and Access Management (CIAM) and cannot be used interchangeably. To emphasize the point, the CIAM platform discussed differences between an IAM and a CIAM and how a CIAM could be a competitive differentiator for any business.

In the article, the company mentioned eight differences between an IAM and a CIAM and discussed three of them.

The first of the three differences mentioned was user experience (UX). The UX of a workforce IAM that is used by employees is completely different from a CIAM that is used by customers.

That’s because employees can be held to procedures and standards, while customers want freedom to manage their own journey, explained Transmit Security.

According to the business, IAM and CIAM could be compared to a submarine and a cruise ship.

A submarine is not designed for comfort or capacity and its passengers are not on board to have a good time, the company explained.

On the other hand, a cruise ship must provide both elements to its passengers, as they are in it for the experience. In fact, passengers on a cruise ship would expect luxury and pampering, which would never be the case on a submarine.

A CIAM, according to Transmit Security, is like a cruise ship, providing users with a beautiful experience, while an IAM is more functional.

The analogy was also extended to explain the second difference between the two—scalability. A submarine is not designed for numbers and it can be extremely difficult to accommodate more people than capacity.

A cruise ship, on the other hand, can accommodate more people and still give them a high-quality experience, said Transmit Security. It can handle low business during certain months, with sudden surges during other parts of the year.

The company explained that a CIAM is similar to a cruise ship in that regard. It often needs to be a cloud-based solution, which in turn, allows it to expand as the organization grows. Since it is cloud-based, it can accommodate surges of traffic.

An IAM, unfortunately, does not scale up as efficiently, according to the business. Also, since the number of employees is fairly constant, it does not need to factor unexpected traffic.

The third difference, stated the company, is the use and control of devices. Since a workforce IAM is implemented within an organization, the employers have control over the devices and apps that the employees use and can implement policies to mitigate risk.

Employees can also be provided training and support on how to use the IAM, Transmit Security asserted.

On the other hand, customers use their own devices, operating systems, and apps in order to access an organization’s services. That means a CIAM needs to be more stringent about authenticating identities than an IAM.

A CIAM also needs to be more intuitive since customers cannot be given training on how to use it. If they feel it is too complicated, they may not continue patronizing the business, said Transmit Security.

Whilst these were the three main differences between a workforce IAM and a CIAM discussed by the company, it also mentioned that its white paper on the subject identified five more differences.

All of these combined help businesses stand apart from competitors, while reducing friction and fraud from their processes.
