Schneider Honored With 10th EPA SmartWay Excellence Award for Environmental Efforts and Named to Third EPA High Performer List

Schneider (NYSE: SNDR), a premier provider of transportation and logistics services, has established itself as a leader in green initiatives by prioritizing efficiency and sustainability. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized this commitment, honoring Schneider with the SmartWay Excellence Award for the 10th time.

The SmartWay Excellence Award recognizes Schneider’s outstanding leadership in freight supply chain environmental performance and energy efficiency. The award is the EPA’s highest recognition for organizations that significantly reduce the environmental impacts of the freight sector and is reserved for the best of SmartWay’s partners. The EPA recognized all partners with the SmartWay Excellence Award on Monday, Oct. 7, 2019, at the American Trucking Associations (ATA) Management Conference & Exhibition (MCE) in San Diego, California.

“This year, the U.S. EPA’s SmartWay Transport Partnership is recognizing 50 truck carriers and five multimodal carriers as recipients of the 2019 SmartWay Excellence Award,” said the EPA’s director of the Office of Transportation and Air Quality, Sarah Dunham. “These awardees are the top 2% of environmental performers among all of our SmartWay Partners. They are redefining best practices for freight transport by reducing fuel costs and improving the public health of the communities they serve.”

Schneider has also been named to the EPA’s SmartWay High Performer list, which recognizes transportation companies that are a step ahead in meeting the challenges of the sustainable goods movement. This designation has been earned by Schneider each of the three years since it was established. Schneider was recognized for its ability to improve fuel efficiency and reduction of carbon emissions. As one of only five multimodal carriers to make the list, the award reinforces Schneider’s reputation as a sustainability leader in the trucking and logistics services industry.

“Fuel efficiency, freight consolidation and energy conservation have been the tenets of Schneider’s sustainability initiatives for over 40 years,” said Rob Reich, executive vice president and chief administrative officer at Schneider. “Investing in energy-efficient technologies and collaborating with research and environmental groups enable us to improve our sustainability practices and elevate the industry as a whole. These efforts benefit our customers and our business, as well as protect the precious natural resources we all share.”

As a charter member of the SmartWay Transport Partnership, Schneider joined forces with the EPA and other businesses committed to reducing the supply chain’s effect on the environment by improving efficiency and supply chain sustainability. Since the program began in 2004, Schneider and its fellow SmartWay partners have saved a total of 280 million barrels of oil and $37 billion in fuel costs, while reducing carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and particulate matter by over 134 million metric tons. This is the equivalent of eliminating the annual energy use in over 18 million homes.

Among its continuous sustainability efforts, Schneider has implemented a wide array of fuel-efficient features, and continues to test, develop and deploy different technologies and practices to improve its performance and results. Schneider suggests that shippers taking the first step toward building a greener supply chain learn what to look for in a transportation provider by checking out the white paper “The Importance of Being Green.”
