Jacksonville Electrical Services Company Lists What People Should Know for Electrical Safety Month

May is National Electrical Safety Month, so Crawford Electric explains what property owners should know to prevent electrical accidents and injuries. Their skilled team provides a variety of electrical services in Jacksonville, including inspections, maintenance, and repair.

Electrical Safety Foundation International reports that around 35,000 home fires, 1,130 injuries, and 500 deaths occur yearly due to electrical mishaps. To prevent a tragedy, all property owners should routinely check that their power systems and appliances are safe to use. For National Electrical Safety Month, Crawford Electric recommends that locals take these precautions:

Check Cords Regularly: Any equipment or appliances with an electric cord should be checked regularly for fraying, cracking, and other damage. If damage is discovered, replace the cord or device immediately. Note that running cords under carpets and nailing them to walls or floors can damage the insulation and cause electrical fires.

Take “Small” Issues Seriously: Flickering lights, sparks, and non-functioning outlets may seem like minor nuisances. However, they are signs of serious electrical problems. Even small issues can turn into significant safety hazards, so it is wise to call a licensed electrician for repairs as soon as possible.

Don’t Forget the Outdoors: Electrical safety is not just limited to indoors. Outdoor electrical systems, such as swimming pool and hot tub circuits, can be damaged due to weather and other environmental factors. All outdoor outlets should have weather-resistant covers and use Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) to prevent electrical shocks.

Schedule an Inspection: Even if nothing seems wrong, electrical systems should be checked periodically by a licensed electrical contractor. It’s recommended to schedule an electrical inspection every five years for private homes or during every change in occupancy. Businesses should be inspected at least every five years.
