The world's first smartphone with an integrated cloud without a data center
The Volla Phone Quintus from Germany reaches its crowd funding target in less than 3 hours

Volla Systeme recently presented its new flagship model on Kickstarter. The Volla Phone Quintus combines high performance and elegantly slim design with convenience and security. This is made possible by its own Android operating system Volla OS with an intelligent user interface and unique security mode. A world first is an integrated cloud that is formed from networked smartphones and does not require a data center. Holochain, a technology inspired by blockchain and at the same time further developed, creates maximum independence and security against data theft. The Volla Cloud has the potential to create a new ecosystem for apps and the cloud as we know it today from Apple and Google.

For a clear head. The new lightness

Volla Systems targets two key user desires that modern smartphones increasingly lack: Simplicity and privacy.

It's no secret that modern smartphones demand more and more time and attention. Their apps are designed for this. Complexity is also increasing. Volla counters this with the springboard of the Volla OS start app. From here, users can access all important everyday functions, including the latest messages and contacts, without having to open an app. An intelligent input field understands the user's concerns and makes suggestions for completion or a suitable function. Apps are grouped automatically. First those that the user uses most frequently.

“I want to give users more time and attention for what pays off,” explains Volla founder Dr. Jörg Wurzer, “It's about quality of life”

The new lightness goes hand in hand with the protection of privacy. This is also part of a free mind. The well-known market leaders also promise their users that their data and privacy will be protected. However, they cannot keep this promise. Your operating system is inextricably linked to your cloud, which is operated in large data centers. Not only are personal messages, photos, location or browser history stored and analyzed there. Laws such as the Cloud Act in the USA and the Digital Service Act in the EU force operators to open back doors. For example, push messages on Google are systematically monitored by the US secret service.

Volla OS is free from the iCloud or Google Play services. If you still need them for apps, you can activate microG, which ensures compatibility. A unique security mode makes it possible to temporarily block specific apps and Internet connections. Internet connections can be protected with the optional and VPN from hide.me, which does not log any Internet activity. “We want to give users back control over their data,” explains Dr. Wurzer.

Distributed cloud with post-blockchain technology

For the integrated Volla Cloud, Volla Systeme is working with the Holochain Foundation based in Gibraltar. Their technology uses the basic concept of a blockchain to write data transactions into a protocol that is stored in a distributed manner and ensures the consistency of the data. At the same time, Holochain goes beyond blockchain technology. The protocol, the ledger, is not global, but is only shared among trusted participants for each application. This makes the system much more lightweight and energy-efficient. Last but not least, data can also be securely deleted again using Holochain technology. That sounds trivial. But it is not. With a blockchain, the amount of data increases continuously. The problem is foreseeable.

The two applications are a secure messenger “Relay” and an intelligent backup app “Recovery”, which can restore the user's data if the smartphone is damaged or stolen. Recovery promises to be intelligent because it initially backs up the most important data in the background without putting too much strain on the data connection and battery. And if the internal memory is not sufficient, the data is stored off-site but is still available virtually. To attract as many users as possible, the apps are also planned for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Alternative without compromising the hardware

To create transparency and involve the community, Volla OS is open source. Alternatively, the Volla Phone Quintus is available with the mobile Linux operating system Ubuntu Touch. For this, Volla Systeme works closely with the UBports Foundation. If you can't decide, you can use both operating systems with the multi-boot function. With the Volla Phone Quintus, for the first time there is no need for an additional memory card.

The most important features of the Volla Phone Quintus at a glance:

  • 6.78 inch AmoLED curved display with punch hole for front camera
  • Triple camera with up to native 50 megapixels
  • 8-core Mediatek Dimensity 7050 processor
  • 8 GB RAM and 256 GB internal memory
  • Connectivity for 2G/3G/4G/5G, Bluetooth 5.2, WLAN including Wifi 6

Volla System remains true to its concept made in Germany. The operating system is developed by our own team. The final and security-relevant steps of production take place at the Remscheid site in Germany. The young company has set up its own production capacities for the Quintus, paving the way for the future.

Interested parties can still support the Crowd Funding Project on Kickstarter until mid-August and have the Volla Phone Quintus pre-registered at a special price as a reward.
