Many parents opt to take their children to pediatricians instead of general medical practitioners; however, this trend doesn’t extend to dentistry, where many are unaware of the specialized care available for children.
Dr.Jasveen Singh, referred to as “Dr. Jaz” by her patients, is a pediatric dentist who specializes in transforming her young patients’ anxieties into confidence by helping them confront their fears. She employs Positive Behavior Guidance techniques to navigate through treatments successfully, often without the need for sedation. Despite referrals from other practitioners suggesting sedation, Dr. Jaz strives to complete treatments using techniques like distraction, tell-show-do, and voice manipulation, and even singing to patients, leaving parents impressed as their children emerge from treatment happy and carefree.
Behavior management is central in Dr. Jaz’s practice, enabling her to treat children with Autism and Special needs without sedation. She explains, “The reason I became a pediatric dentist was to instill confidence in children. Teaching them to confront fears during dental visits builds their confidence for life.”
Dr. Jaz encountered a child with Autism whose mother expressed that every dental treatment procedure visit was dreadful, with the child often crying and screaming throughout. Seeing this as an opportunity to demonstrate the effectiveness of positive behavior guidance, Dr. Jaz took on the challenge. After successfully completing the treatment without any signs of discomfort from the child, the mother was deeply moved. Witnessing her child’s calm demeanor, she was overcome with emotion and tears of astonishment and joy.
Dr. Jaz emphasizes the resilience of children and advocates for empowering them to face fears with confidence, believing it’s essential for society to foster such empowerment.
Beyond instilling confidence, pediatric dentists like Dr. Jaz excel in assessing children’s growth and development. With training in evaluating airways, identifying tongue and lip ties, and interpreting developmental x-rays which can contribute to early diagnosis of rare syndromes. Dr. Jaz recounts a case where a developmental x-ray revealed missing adult teeth, leading to a diagnosis of Ectodermal Dysplasia (a rare genetic disorder), allowing the family to prepare for future dental needs.
Dr. Jaz’s journey in dentistry began at Tufts University, where she laid the solid foundation for her practice. However, it was her specialized training in Pediatric Dentistry at Boston University that truly honed her skills in diagnosing and treating children. This unique experience underscored the significance of continuous learning in dentistry’s dynamic field, empowering her to provide more informative and comprehensive care to her young patients.
