Seven Bergen County towns were under a boil water advisory Friday, July 22, after tests revealed E. coli within the distribution system. The following seven counties were affected: Fairview, Cliffside Park, Ridgefield, Edgewater, Fort Lee, Palisades Park, and Leonia. Veolia Water New Jersey, the utility formerly known as Suez, published a map online showing areas covered by the alert.
The utility said it was “continuously monitoring and testing the system” and would alert residents when the advisory would be lifted. According to Veolia's advisory they included instruction on how to boil the water to kill the bacteria and other organisms that will cause adverse reactions. E. coli presents a more serious health risk to infants, young children, older people, and those with compromised immune systems.
“E. coli can be transmitted through contaminated water and food or through contact with infected feces from animals, people, or contaminated surfaces,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Fortunately, EMSL Analytical, Inc. offers drinking water testing service, which identify contaminants such as total coliform, E. coli, lead, nitrate, nitrite and turbidity. Additional contaminants EMSL can test for include iron, manganese, and pH.”
EMSL can detect and quantify E. coli in your water samples using real-time PCR methods. With 50 laboratory and service center locations in the United States and Canada, EMSL can help test for E. coli and other water pathogens that can affect you or your business.
