Dollar General Foundation Awards Family Literacy Grant to The Dr. Annise Mabry Foundation

OGLETHORPE, Ga. - Dollar General Literacy Foundation announced on May 13, 2021 as the largest one-day grant donation in its 28-year history. More than $10.5 million was donated to support literacy and education in the communities that Dollar General (NYSE: DG) serves.

The Dr. Annise Mabry Foundation was one of four Georgia nonprofit organizations in Georgia to be selected by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation that received a family literacy grant to help with their Parent and Child Together Time (PACT) initiative.

“Macon County is a persistent poverty community where 34% of adults 18-24 don’t have a high school diploma; and, 43% of the elementary students struggle with reading comprehension or reading fluency. As the only nonprofit organization in Southwest Georgia that works directly with law enforcement agencies, the law enforcement community realized that these statistics were straining resources throughout the county” explained Dr. Mabry.

Chief Patricia Barber of the Marshallville Police Department echoed Dr. Mabry’s sentiments. “When Dr. Mabry approached me in 2019 about starting an online Chief’s Reading Room program for elementary and middle school children,I wasn’t sure how it would look but I knew we had to do something different because I was watching too many children fall through the cracks in my city.”

The Dr. Annise Mabry Foundation selected Carnegie Learning as the online service provider. Carnegie Learning is the parent company of the Fast ForWord online reading intervention program. The Fast ForWord intervention program is designed for elementary school children, starting at age 5, through middle school, all the way up to high school (even adult learners!) with: reading difficulties, auditory processing disorder (APD), speech or language impairment, mild to moderate autism, dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, a learning disability, or general learning struggles but do not qualify for extra help at school.

"For nearly 30 years, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has been proud to invest in literacy and education programs in our hometown communities," said DenineTorr, executive director of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. "The recent and significant shifts in the educational landscape have made the Foundation’s mission more critically important. As we work to create access to high-quality instruction for all individuals, we share our gratitude for the educators who are working to uplift and empower others. We hope these funds will have a meaningful impact on students and teachers across the country and look forward to seeing the positive impact they have on learners.”

This donation is part of its yearly effort to help support adult, family, summer and youth literacy programs in nonprofit organizations, schools and libraries within a 15-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center.

Parents who want to register their child for the Macon County Chief’s Reading Room Program can register online at the Macon County Chief’s Diploma Program Facebook page or in person at any Macon County Police Department.
