All plants are native to Brazil and most of the accessories are actually from Brazil – such as various baskets made by indigenous people, Brazilian wood Wooden armadillos, soapstone vases from Brazil, Minas Gerais, etc. Even the vintage olive green leather sofa is the work of Brazilian designer Percival Laffer in the 1970s.
Indoor plants need more or less light no matter where they come from. We like different plant shapes. Using a grow light for indoor plants should also play a decorative role without destroying the overall beauty.
While hope and optimism loom as lockdown measures ease, uncertainty remains about the possibility of travel abroad this year. According to the American Express Trends report, people miss travel so much, it takes a toll on their mood and affects their well-being, with nearly half (48%) of respondents saying that being unable to travel makes them anxious and stressed. We’ve teamed up with The Joy of Plants on our latest project to reveal how to transform your home with houseplants and immerse yourself in another country, even if you’re planning a home vacation.
With many restrictions still in place and no signs of easing anytime soon, we wanted to show the power of indoor plant travel. Houseplant travel involves taking native houseplants from countries around the world and combining them with iconic interior design trends to transform the spaces in your home and transport you to the shores of far-flung destinations. Igor created two very different beautiful looks, taking inspiration from Brazil, while Judith chose South Africa. We’ve all truly captured the flora and style of each country, and houseplants are firmly in the spotlight. Let’s start with our first destination: Brazil!
I’ll admit, I have a soft spot for the giant Philodendron Selloum. The huge leaves on its long, thick stems really took me straight to the Amazon jungle. Sitting under its green canopy, I feel like I’m waiting any minute to hear raindrops on its umbrella-like leaves. I also love the beautiful bromeliads with their tiny pink and purple flowers. I remember those plants that grow all over Brazil, usually epiphytes on big trees. Also, Philodendron Tortum is beloved for its very unusual leaves in the Philodendron family. Calathea Burle Marxii is precious to me because it is named after one of my favorite Brazilian artists and landscape architects, Roberto Burle Marx.
