Haier Biomedical Gives New Impetus to Abidjan

In 2006, Abidjan, the economic capital and largest port city of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, known as the “Little Paris of West Africa” and the “Little Manhattan,” faced an environmental crisis due to the illegal dumping of toxic industrial waste by a cargo ship. The waste, as analyzed by French researchers at the time, contained substances harmful to human health and the environment, such as hydrogen sulfide and hydrocarbons. These substances, soluble in water and oil, are known as “nerve agents,” and they can result in health issues such as respiratory difficulties, nausea and vomiting, chest pains, and diarrhea among the local population. This event triggered a severe health crisis in Côte d'Ivoire, with long-term implications for both the local population and environmental security.

Over the years, Ivorian authorities have been committed to decontamination efforts, exploring effective measures such as the decontamination of abandoned sites to ensure the safety of the population and the environment. Recently, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development of Côte d’Ivoire procured a mobile environmental testing laboratory from Haier Biomedical for environmental inspection in Abidjan.

The customized mobile laboratory for environmental testing is mounted on a testing vehicle and equipped with laboratory-grade analytical instruments, including a gas chromatograph, fluorescence spectrometer, spectrophotometer, air quality monitoring station, XRF analyzer, biological safety cabinet, and incubator. These instruments facilitate the testing of environmental quality and contamination levels through the collection of soil, water, and air samples. The mobile laboratory also integrates an intelligent information management system to cater to emergency testing needs, and connects to other environmental monitoring stations to form a comprehensive integrated environmental monitoring network system for water, air, and land, enabling emergency testing, rapid response, and real-time reporting.

The vehicle, measuring 12 meters in length, not only houses the laboratory space but also includes a separate equipment room for the generator, serving as a backup power supply, to ensure continued operation under adverse conditions. In addition, the vehicle features a negative-pressure fresh air system, catering to various environmental testing requirements.
