The Baer’s Pochard, Oujiang Schizothoracin, Orange-vented Newt, Spotted-backed Forktail, Oriental Newt, Tiantai Rough-skinned Frog, Web-toed Gecko, Günther’s Grass Lizard, Taiwan Slug Snake, and Hook-billed Shrike… These wild animals have all been discovered in Liandu District, Lishui City, Zhejiang Province. Recently, the local authorities released the results of a wildlife resource survey, which recorded 10 new species, further enriching the biodiversity database. This discovery showcases the unique charm of nature and highlights the harmony and beauty between humans and the natural world.
Lishui, often praised as "China's No. 1 Ecological City," features Liandu District as its urban center. Located in the southwestern heartland of Zhejiang Province and along the middle reaches of the Oujiang River, Liandu serves as a critical ecological barrier for Zhejiang and the greater East China region. Covering a total area of 2.24 million mu (about 149,000 hectares), the district boasts a forest coverage rate of 68.95% and is home to six nature reserves, including two at the national level. It is one of the most biodiverse regions in Zhejiang Province.
Strolling through Liandu feels like stepping into a natural "bird kingdom." According to survey results, Liandu has recorded 387 bird species across 19 orders and 72 families. Among these are 10 species under Class I National Key Protection and 72 under Class II National Key Protection. Additionally, the district is home to 50 bird species listed for key protection by Zhejiang Province.
The rich diversity of wildlife species in Liandu District can be attributed to its excellent forest and wetland ecosystems. The local authorities have implemented three key measures to protect wildlife habitats.
First, nature reserves have been established in areas with particularly abundant wildlife, with strict protection and management measures in place. Second, efforts have been intensified to protect and manage forest resources, particularly ecological public welfare forests. Third, wetland ecological restoration projects have been carried out, including ecological water replenishment, which has significantly improved wetland ecosystems.
