Stride, Inc. Wins Prestigious Chemistry Education Prize for Work in Minecraft from the Royal Society of Chemistry

Stride, Inc. has won the prize for the development of Periodic Rescue, a chemistry game in Minecraft, that has taught basic chemistry to over 10,000 students. This year’s winners join a prestigious list of past winners in the RSC’s prize portfolio, 60 of whom have gone on to win Nobel Prizes for their work, including 2022 Nobel Laureate Carolyn Bertozzi and 2019 Nobel laureate John B Goodenough.

Stride, Inc. also receives a team trophy, a custom video, a certificate and a token of recognition for each team member.

“We are delighted to be honored with the Horizon Prize for our Minecraft Education world, a testament to our dedication to fostering game-based learning,” said Niyoka McCoy, Chief Learning Officer at Stride, Inc. “At the heart of our educational community lie passionate teachers and educators who generously share their expertise with others. Embracing innovative technology is central to our mission as we continually explore exciting educational ideas. The Horizon Prize serves as a valuable resource, inspiring fresh ideas for your own classrooms and programs, all while contributing to the advancement of chemistry education. We are deeply honored to receive this recognition, reaffirming our commitment to immersive and innovative learning experiences.”

Periodic Rescue grew out of a need to teach basic chemistry concepts in an engaging and intuitive manner. Minecraft Education uses the principles of discovery learning and lets students explore and create on their own. The design team wanted to take full advantage of this and create a world where the students need minimal direction from inside the world and be allowed to 'learn by doing.'

Dr Helen Pain, Chief Executive of the Royal Society of Chemistry, said: “The chemical sciences are at the forefront of tackling a range of challenges facing our world. From fundamental chemistry to cutting-edge innovations, the work that chemical scientists do has an important role to play in building our future. The inspiration, innovation and dedication of those who work in education is fundamental to the progress of the chemical sciences – shaping the future and setting our young people up to tackle the challenges and the opportunities facing our society and our planet. Stride, Inc.’s work demonstrates an outstanding commitment to chemistry education, and it is our honour to celebrate their considerable contribution.”

The Horizon Prizes for Education celebrate ground-breaking innovations and initiatives that mark a step-change in science education, highlighting, recent initiatives that are set to make a real impact within the field of education. These could include teaching programmes or techniques, research breakthroughs, innovative technologies and more.

The Royal Society of Chemistry’s Prizes portfolio is one of the oldest and most prestigious in the world, recognising achievements by individuals, teams and organisations in advancing the chemical sciences. We reward those undertaking excellent work in the chemical sciences from across the world.
