Citizens Against Government Waste Names Sen. Ed Markey and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez 2023 Porker of the Year

Today, Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) announced the results of its online poll for the 2023 Porker of the Year. There were five worthy candidates who were guilty of plugging pricey policies, promoting earmarks and wasteful practices, pushing budget increase, and widening the Green New Deal scheme.

After the votes were tallied, the dishonor went to Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), who were named CAGW’s June 2023 Porkers of the Month for wanting to spend trillions of dollars more for their latest “Green New Deal” scheme. In a runaway race, Sen. Markey and Rep. Ocasio-Cortez received 66 percent of the vote, beating second place New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) by 52 percentage points.

Congress has already approved hundreds of billions for “Green New Deal” projects, but Sen. Markey and Rep. Ocasio-Cortez want even more. Their reintroduction of the “Green New Deal” is full of outrageously expensive programs. It calls for replacing all fossil fuel and nuclear power with solar energy which would require 18.7 billion solar panels and a land mass equal to the combined size of New York and Vermont.

CAGW President Tom Schatz said, “We would like to thank the taxpayers who voted for all of the ‘worthy’ candidates. The results are not surprising, as Sen. Markey and Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s ‘Green New Deal’ is outrageously expensive and would cause enormous environmental damage to our nation while doing little to nothing to reduce pollution. The deal has nothing to do with protecting the environment, it is about a complete takeover of the U.S. economy and the end of capitalism. For trying to push taxpayers deeper into debt, Sen. Markey and Rep. Ocasio-Cortez deserve the distinction of 2023 Porkers of the Year.”

CAGW is the nation's largest nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement in government. Porker of the Year is a dubious honor given to a lawmaker, government official, or political candidate who has shown the most blatant disregard for the interests of taxpayers throughout the year.
