Red Hat Extends Java Support in the Cloud with JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 8

Platform brings improved Jakarta EE 10 compatibility, enabling customers to optimize application development and deployment across the hybrid cloud

Red Hat, Inc., the world's leading provider of open source solutions, today announced the general availability of Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (JBoss EAP) 8. JBoss EAP 8 delivers security enhancements, improved cloud workflow tools, and compatibility with Jakarta EE 10, contributing to streamlined application modernization for customers and continued support for enterprise Java application development.

The state of application modernization

Application modernization continues to be a top priority for organizations. According to 451 Research, part of S&P Global Market Intelligence, “A majority (51%) of organizations say that spending on these efforts will increase even if current economic conditions persist…which underscores the notion that modernization has no fixed endpoint.”1 Organizations are increasingly adopting cloud-based application development in order to enhance the developer experience, increase application scalability, and improve availability and provider support in cloud environments. JBoss EAP is a comprehensive solution for these organizations, as they seek to build, run, deploy, and manage Jakarta® EE (previously Java EE) applications in a variety of environments, including on-premise, virtual environments, and across private, public, and hybrid clouds.

Designed for the flexibility of the open hybrid cloud, JBoss EAP features a modular architecture that starts services only as they are required. The low memory footprint and fast startup times make JBoss EAP an ideal solution for all types of environments where efficient resource utilization is a priority, such as Red Hat OpenShift. JBoss EAP 8 builds on the lightweight, cloud-native capabilities of Red Hat JBoss EAP 7 to improve developer productivity, reduce operational overhead, and ease the path towards modernization. Some of the advancements customers can take advantage of in the latest version include:

  • Jakarta EE 10 support enables customers to benefit from the functionality provided by current versions of the Jakarta EE APIs. With this release, companies can extend the life cycle of their enterprise Java applications.
  • Improved provisioning tools empower developers and operations teams to manage and optimize the deployment of their Jakarta EE applications on all deployment targets, including bare metal, virtual machines, cloud, and Red Hat OpenShift.
  • Security enhancements introduce native support for OpenID Connect and remove legacy security frameworks, making it easier to integrate JBoss EAP with OpenID Connect compliant platforms.

Java for the cloud

According to the Eclipse Foundation’s 2023 Jakarta EE Developer Survey, an increasing number of companies are using certified Jakarta EE platforms to run business critical applications.2 JBoss EAP 8 enables customers to extend the product life cycle for these applications through a simplified path to migrate from earlier releases or from other Jakarta EE platforms. This also gives customers the ability to further take advantage of cloud native platforms like Red Hat OpenShift while continuing to receive support for their applications.
