Housing Advocates Disgusted by Governor Newsom’s Cruel Encampment Sweeps

No mention of where people are supposed to go as state cannot account for $24 billion in funds designated for housing and homeless services

Housing Is A Human Right strongly condemns Governor Gavin Newsom’s executive order instructing state officials to begin dismantling homeless encampments throughout California – a horrifying move that also makes no mention of where California’s 180,000 homeless people are supposed to live:

“Governor Newsom’s order puts him squarely in the camp of heartless right wingers who have no concern for the welfare of poor homeless people,” said Michael Weinstein, President of AHF, the parent organization of Housing Is A Human Right. “It was strange seeing California's ‘liberal’ governor backing the ultra-conservative Supreme Court majority, but it is even more perverse to see him go full throttle in criminalizing poverty. Instead of fostering effective mechanisms to keep people in their homes, such as rent control, Newsom is doubling down on failed policies.

“Governor Newsom, where do you expect people to go? This is a shameful moment in California history.”

Housing Is A Human Right, an initiative powered by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), believes in a world where everyone has access to safe and affordable housing. Housing is not just a commodity; it's a cornerstone of health, stability, and human dignity. In response to the escalating affordable housing crisis, HHR dedicates itself to advocating for equitable housing legislation and policies.

Our mission is to fight tirelessly for a future where housing affordability isn't a privilege but a right accessible to all, irrespective of their background or economic status.
