Dr. Amy Neuzil Raises Public Awareness About The Dangers of Folic Acid

By: Get News
The doctor warns of risks from high dose folic acid

Dr. Amy Neuzil, founder of To Health With That and host of the popular podcast of the same name, is raising public awareness about the problems caused by folic acid in high doses.

Currently in America, the terms “folate” and “folic acid” are used interchangeably on food labels, making it confusing and difficult for consumers to tell how much folic acid they take in every day.

In low doses, folic acid helps to prevent birth defects, and that has helped many Americans. But deficiencies are less common now because of vitamins, supplements, and energy boosters that also contain folic acid, and we are facing folic acid toxicity.

Folic acid is the form used to fortify wheat flour and corn masa flour and it is in all products made of these grains including bread, cereal, tortillas, pasta, and pastries. Unfortunately, getting too much folic acid has been shown to have serious consequences.

The risks of folic acid toxicity are well-documented in research and include promoting cancer growth and increasing the risk of heart attack. It also causes a buildup of unmetabolized folic acid in the bloodstream which is known to cause fertility issues, contribute to autism in unborn babies, and raise inflammatory markers in the blood.

“Food fortification has helped prevent birth defects like spina bifida and that’s wonderful, but we know more about the risks now. Awareness and the labeling law need to change so people can understand how much folic acid they are really getting every day.”

Folic acid also makes a genetic condition called MTHFR, worse. People with MTHFR are often undiagnosed and suffer needlessly from fatigue, depression, heart disease, anxiety, and fertility troubles. Folic acid makes the symptoms and consequences of MTHFR worse and adds needlessly to the economic burden of healthcare.

Research has shown that roughly 47% of hispanics, 36% of those with European descent, 30% of East Asians, and 9% of those with African descent are carriers of this genetic condition. For these people, folic acid is especially dangerous and makes their symptoms and their risk of cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and infertility, worse.
