Fun community programs designed to involve the entire family in late night activities are important in fighting crime

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World participated with drug education materials and informative answers to questions about dangerous drugs at Late Night Hype, a popular program organized by the Office of the Mayor of Washington, DC, and the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR). Late Night Hype features a festival-style atmosphere with fun activities, DJ, games, food, large screens showing basketball games, and late-night use of recreation center pools.
The Late Night Hype program added a new partner this year: the Beat the Streets program of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). Beat the Streets is a traveling community festival sponsored by the DC police department every week throughout the summer, engaging community members with local social service agencies and community organizations. Together, the programs provide youth with fun activities until 11pm on Friday nights – thus keeping them engaged and away from dangerous situations. The programs are designed to be fun for the whole family in a safe environment.
“At MPD, we’re excited for the summer and committed to working with our partners to make sure our youth and families have positive activities and programming,” said Police Chief Pamela A. Smith. “Beat the Streets provides a safe and fun environment for community members of all ages to come together, and we’re looking forward to working with our partners at DPR to take these events to the next level this year.” Despite the 90-degree weather, people came out and enjoyed their time and showed support for their community and local police department.
Beat the Streets and Late Night Hype provide DC residents with an opportunity to see the Metropolitan Police Department’s Side by Side Band, while bringing a host of additional resources to youth and families who attend, from CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) instruction to voter registration to drug education and prevention.
The Foundation for a Drug-Free World is enjoying its tenth year participating in Beat the Streets and is excited about the new changes that include Late Night Hype. “It’s very family friendly. The atmosphere is great and very positive! It’s a safe place,” said Thalia Ghiglia, the Foundation for a Drug-Free World DC’s Faith Liaison.
The Foundation offers their Truth About Drugs program materials, consisting of videos, documentaries, booklets, and information about some of the most troubling drugs available on the streets today. With the increasing potency of particular drugs and the proliferation of deadly drugs like fentanyl, this information is important to help save lives.
“Our goal is to educate children and their families on drugs because education is the key to prevention,” explained Ms. Ghiglia. “We reach the community throughout Washington, DC, by holding booths at local community events and festivals as well as delivering seminars in schools, at camps, and other educational group settings.”
Ms. Ghiglia continued, “It is an important time, more than ever, to educate our youth and their parents on the dangers of drugs. It starts with going out into our communities and talking with people about it. Education and a willingness to confront the facts head-on are vital. If we do this, then we have a chance to get kids to avoid making an impulsive decision that could cost them their lives and bring hurt and pain to their families and loved ones.”
According to the Foundation, "The best solution is to reach young people with effective, fact-based drug education—before they start experimenting with drugs. Tweens, teens and young adults who know the facts about drugs are much less likely to start using them."
Foundation for a Drug-Free World joined the DC Police Department at Late Night Hype event.
