Foot and ankle physicians, Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPM), undergo extensive training comparable to other medical professionals. Camellia Russell, a third-year podiatric medical student at Temple University, reflects on her journey toward medical school application.
As an undergraduate student at the University of California, Los Angeles, she focused on achieving high grades in prerequisite courses, including Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, English, Physics, Biochemistry, and Calculus. In addition to fulfilling these academic requirements, she prepared for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), a grueling seven-hour and 30-minute exam consisting of four sections: Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems, Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems, Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior, and Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS).
During her application process, Russell was introduced to podiatric medicine by a friend who regularly visited his Foot and Ankle Physician for treatment. His care enabled him to walk comfortably, manage his business, and carry out daily activities. Intrigued by his story, Russell researched podiatric medicine and discovered that becoming a DPM requires four years of medical education, followed by residency and fellowship. The curriculum also includes a significant course load, with a specialization in foot and ankle anatomy and biomechanics starting in the first year of medical school.
"Recognizing the trust my future patients would place in my care, I chose a rigorous path in Podiatric Medicine," Russell states. She faced frequent examinations designed to ensure mastery of medical knowledge, enabling accurate diagnosis and treatment of patients.
The importance of this training was reinforced during Russell's volunteer work at a Special Olympics event, where she encountered a patient with diabetic neuropathy. The patient's history revealed a meningioma treatment involving prolonged glucocorticoid administration, leading to various complications. The patient's sister expressed sadness at not being informed about the potential side effects earlier.
This case aligns with a recent USA Today report revealing statistics on Americans facing disability or mortality due to misdiagnoses. Specifically, researchers found that stroke misdiagnoses were missed in over 17.5% of cases. Given that misdiagnoses erode healthcare trust, Russell believes comprehensive training for students from the beginning of their education can improve diagnostic accuracy and restore patient trust.
"While the title of 'Physician' may not carry significant weight with patients, their trust in a physician's knowledge and expertise is crucial," Russell emphasizes.
