From Bedridden to Half Marathon Training: Brain Injury and Concussion Success Story at The Neural Connection

Paula Walters, a paramedic who once faced severe health challenges following a domestic assault and a brain injury, transformed her life through individualized treatments and home exercises from The Neural Connection, allowing her to reclaim her ability to work 24-hour shifts and advocate for domestic violence survivors.

Paula Walters, a paramedic working 24-hour shifts and training for a half-marathon, was once so unwell that she couldn't drive or work. Her health spiraled after a 2006 domestic assault, leading to multiple diagnoses, including neurocardiogenic syncope, POTS, and fibromyalgia. In 2017, she had her first MRI revealing a brain injury, initially misdiagnosed as MS.

"I was at rock bottom. I thought 'I’m 45 years old, I can’t drive, I can’t work, and they’re telling me I’m gonna be on disability for the rest of my life,'" she recalls.

Seeking answers online, Walters discovered a TBI Facebook group that led her to The Neural Connection. She immediately began treatment with doctors at The Neural Connection. And their validation and customized treatment helped her reclaim her life.

“From the very beginning they listened and reassured me that what I was feeling was correct,” Walters shared.

The providers worked together and equipped her with home exercises, enabling her to manage her symptoms independently. Now, they meet monthly via telehealth to adjust her regimen.

“Everything they taught me I can do at home. So when I have bad days or things happen to me, I don’t have to run out there to get treatment,” Walters explained.

The doctors emphasize and specifically focus on patient involvement in their patient’s health journey. Walters’ dedication showcases the effectiveness of individualized therapies at The Neural Connection.

“Paula is a great example of hard work paying off, specifically when paired together with individualized therapies, nutritional protocols, and personal recommendations to maximize her overall quality of life,” said Dr. Thompson Maesaka, one of the providers at The Neural Connection.

“There is no better feeling than kicking patients out of our office because of the progress they’ve made and the outcomes they’ve achieved, especially when they continue to get better without having to see us” said Dr. Erik Reis, another provider at The Neural Connection.

Walters is thriving, now working 24-hour shifts without struggle and actively helping domestic violence survivors access similar care.

"I am the best that I have probably ever been in my life," she stated.

Her message to others who are dealing with chronic health issues and concussions is clear: “Trust your body, and trust your gut. Keep searching.”

Grateful to the doctors, Walters clarifies, “It’s not that they fixed me, but they equipped me. My brain injury is not going to go away, and I’m always going to have issues, especially as I get older. But they equipped me and educated me. Now I have a better quality life because of them."
