(PRUnderground) January 17th, 2024

The Department of Religious Studies at California State University, Long Beach is honored to announce the appointment of Dr. Shivani Bothra as the assistant professor and the inaugural Bhagwan Suvidhinath Endowed Chair in Jain Studies. This appointment is made possible through the generous support of Dr. Jasvant Modi and the Shah Foundation.

The endowment, named after the 9th Tirthankara in Jainism, symbolizes the spiritual teachings that Dr. Modi wishes to propagate. A retired gastroenterologist, Dr. Modi is an avid philanthropist, focusing on supporting the Jain community and promoting Jain studies globally.

Dr. Bothra, a scholar specializing in non-violence, modernization, and women in Jainism, brings a wealth of knowledge and insight to the university. Her work is vital in shedding light on Jainism, an ancient religion emphasizing Ahimsa (non-violence), Apringraha (non-materialism), and Anekantavada (plurality of beliefs). She is eager to start her role, with plans to teach various courses on Jainism and its role in promoting non-violence across world religions.

Dr. Modi’s journey from India to the United States and his successful career in medicine have fueled his passion for giving back, particularly in education. “I was able to pursue my higher education due to the kindness of others. Now, I want to extend that support to future generations,” says Dr. Modi. “In the face of differing beliefs, it is crucial to practice non-violence and respect.”

The university is excited to welcome Dr. Bothra and extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Modi and the Shah Foundation. This partnership marks a significant step in enriching the academic landscape and promoting diversity and understanding through education.

Dr. Jasvant Modi, born in Godhra, India in 1951, is a highly skilled gastroenterologist who completed his medical education at B.J. Medical College. Following his residency in Chicago, Illinois, he immigrated to the United States in 1975, dedicating himself to his medical career and philanthropic endeavors. Dr. Modi and his wife, Meera, are passionate about spreading the faith of Jainism through educational and medical work, both in the United States and in their home country of India. Their dedication is exemplified by the acquisition and development of four small hospitals, which have become vital support systems for their respective communities. Dr. Modi’s significant contributions and unwavering support make him an invaluable partner to the University of Birmingham’s Jainism Studies and Research program.
