Microneedling: Benefits & How It Works
If you’re troubled by the appearance of scars, stretch marks or wrinkles, you’ll want to learn more about microneedling.
This minimally invasive skin treatment gives you a more even skin tone for beautiful, glowing skin. The procedure uses tiny needles to create small punctures while minimizing cellular damage. Microneedling stimulates the body’s natural healing process, causing the skin to produce more collagen and elastin.
At Cayce Medical Spa, our professional skin care team uses SkinPen, the only FDA-approved, medical-grade microneedling device for fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks and scarring.
How Microneedling Helps Your Skin
Microneedling promotes a more even skin tone for men and women, and it is safe and well-tolerated by all skin types. It works by stimulating the body’s natural mechanisms for regenerating healthy skin tissue. Results appear gradually over the course of three to five monthly treatments, as your body produces collagen and elastin.
Patients who may benefit from microneedling include those with any of these conditions:
- Pigment disorders
- Uneven skin tone or texture
- Acne scars
- Burn scars
- Traumatic scars
- Stretch marks
What to Expect During Your Appointment
Cayce Medical Spa provides microneedling treatments using SkinPen, which uses 14 stainless steel, medical-grade needles to puncture the skin at a rate of 1,000 micro-injuries per second. The needles penetrate the skin at a uniform depth.
Before Your Treatment
Avoid unprotected sun exposure or tanning beds for several weeks leading up to your appointment. Stop using exfoliating products such as Retinol, Retin-A, tri-luma, glycolic acid and salicylic acid for three to five days prior. Drink plenty of water for a few days ahead of time, and don’t apply makeup or moisturizers the day of the appointment.
During Your Appointment
Your esthetician will begin by cleaning the skin and applying a topical anesthetic, which will set for about 30 minutes. Once the area is numb, the microneedling pen will be passed over the treatment area, which takes about 15 minutes.
After Your Appointment
Most patients return to normal activities within 24 hours after microneedling. Some people notice minor redness or irritation, which typically heals on their own. Avoid alcohol-based skin products or exfoliants until your skin recovers. Wait 72 hours before sweating, if possible.
For best results, Cayce Medical Spa recommends three to five treatments about 30 days apart. Results typically last about six months after your last appointment, and follow-up treatments can be scheduled as needed.
When to Avoid Microneedling
Microneedling is not recommended for the following patients:
- If you are pregnant
- If you have an active acne breakout or if you recently used accutane for acne
- If you have eczema, rosacea or similar conditions
- If you scar easily or have a condition that hinders wound healing
- If you’ve had skin radiation treatments in the past 12 months
