The announcement comes as obesity rates continue to increase globally. One out of every three adults in the US is obese. The majority of weight loss or bariatric surgeries are now carried out laparoscopically and are regarded as among the safest surgical options for weight loss. The three most common types of bariatric surgery are the lap band, gastric sleeve, and gastric bypass – and these procedures are only the first step toward living a long and healthy life.

Dr. Toby Broussard explains that a restrictive operation called a laparoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (LSG) removes roughly 70 to 80 percent of the stomach. The stomach is now left with the size and shape of a hot dog, roughly in the form of a tube or “sleeve.” This is a very efficient weight loss method that alters hormones to decrease hunger. The hormonal imbalance lasts for roughly a year, after which the stomach’s tiny tube restricts how much food can be consumed.

A flexible silastic band around the upper region of the stomach is known as the lap band or adjustable gastric band system. In 2001, the FDA gave it the go-ahead for the treatment of obesity. The band is connected to tubing, which is subsequently connected to a port that is positioned beneath the skin of the abdomen.

During a typical office visit where a fluid is pumped into or extracted from the port, the tightness of the band is adjusted. The band should be adjusted so that the patient can lose weight while still feeling satisfied after a substantial protein meal. In essence, the band makes a little stomach pouch, limiting how much food or fluids can be consumed.

While generally efficient and safe, the procedures may require longer preparation than other surgical interventions.

A spokesperson for the company said: “Weeks before the actual operation, the process for many bariatric procedures begins. The first medical assessment, psychological screening, discussion with dietitians and exercise physiologists, and sleep assessment are all included. This is all done to ensure that patients are aware of every aspect of gastric sleeve surgery and other bariatric treatments. The surgery is proud to have a large number of success stories from patients who have undergone weight loss surgery and had positive results.”

With the latest announcement, Dr. Broussard continues to expand his range of services according to the latest medical and technological innovations.

Lead surgeon at the Weightwise bariatric program, Dr. Toby Broussard, received a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. After receiving his M.D., he enrolled in medical school at Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport. At Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Broussard received his first surgical training. He returned to Louisiana after completing his surgical residency and started a comprehensive private practice, which he oversaw for 13 years.

Dr. Broussard was exposed to bariatric surgery while doing his residency at Carraway Methodist Medical Center, and while running his private practice, he continued to grow increasingly interested in it. Dr. Broussard eventually decided to focus on bariatric surgery.
